It is so important that children have good vision because they learn so much through their eyes. Children are offered a pre-school vision screening. However, this is not a thorough full eye examination checking the eye health.
Some children don’t realise their vision is not as clear as it could be because they have not known any different, so poor sight can often go undetected.
We advise children should have their first eye examination around age 3. Children do not need to be able to read to have their eyes fully tested. They should then have regular eye examinations at least every 2 years. However, if you have any concerns with your child’s eyes at any age please do not hesitate to bring them into see us.
Under 16s and those under 19 and in full time education qualify for free NHS funded eye tests, and if spectacles are required an NHS optical voucher which provides free or reduced cost spectacles will be issued by your optometrist.
